phages – process part 354

PHAGES

Can we truly edit things down to their core, without stripping something useful away? That’s what I wonder. Not to sound cliche, but in an internet world where ‘content’ and ‘visibility’ are king, can something that’s been stripped down to it’s core elements still be relevant – even exciting? That’s really the overall question I’m trying to answer, for myself at least, with phages. I’m a lover of all music: maximal, minimal and all in between, but subtlety and/or overtness aren’t really the point here. phages. isn’t minimal as an exercise, it’s trimmed to the point of the raw necessities so it highlights the individual parts, which may in turn bring the true nature of the songs and art to the forefront. This may not work in all forms of art, or life for that matter, but it’s something that I’ve pondered. I’ve always tried to find the shortest distance to the core of something, whether it be music, painting – or just communicating in any fashion. So, if I had one point to make, it’s that I feel like I’ve gotten close to arriving at this place with phages, at least for this little moment in time. This is definitely not a statement or ethos, it’s an ongoing question.
