kevin gorman – process part 263 (roots)

For my part in this series, I’ve been re-visiting my musical roots. I’ve made a mix (and edits) of old hardcore and early jungle. This was the music of my youth and has in various ways influenced the tracks I write.

Back in the early nineties, I was (badly) mixing these records on a set of battered belt drive decks and mono mixer. The music style was a raw soundclash of Detroit techno meets up-tempo hip-hop breaks. Everyone has a period in their life when they feel that music changed forever, when you spent every last bit of cash on vinyl. This was mine.

In subsequent years I started to dig deeper into the music. An interest in finding the original breaks led to an obsession with funk, soul and jazz records. At the same time, I hunted down the classic techno that had been so blatantly ripped off (eg ‘The Sound’ by Reese). However, I will always have a soft spot for these original vinyls. They are naive, cheesy almost, when the music was finding its way . Called ‘Jungle Techno’ by some, it went on to spawn so many new genres in subsequent years. Tracks later in the mix are examples of this.

So, I thought it would be interesting to re-visit this old wax, using all the technology at my hands now. To drop the tracks that still sound fresh and re-edit the ones that need it, to play some at the wrong speed and to even mix in a recent cut that fits.

This is the end result. It is what it is.
